CHAPTER NINETEEN

A couple of days later, after the jury went out, Nicki was drinking wine and nodding off when the doorbell rang. She got up from the couch, tossed Stoli off the arm rest, and looked out the front window. There was no car in sight but there’s no parking on her side of the street, and it would be impossible to know if a visitor was parked up or down the block. Her friends all knew to call before they came over because she was unlikely to answer the door for anyone at night, and Shep was out of town. But the face she saw through the peep hole, albeit elongated and zig-zaggy from the old glass, looked friendly, if not familiar.

“Who is it?” Nicki called through the door, “and what the hell are you doing ringing my doorbell?”

“Nik, it’s me,” the voice answered. Nicki was getting ready to make a smart remark when suddenly she could hardly take in the air in front of her. No one called her Nik. Not Shep. Not her mother. Not her best friend. No one except . . .

“Please, Nik, let me in. I need to talk to you,” Detective Tyler was saying to the door.

Nicki opened the door slowly, peering through the sliver of space she allowed.

“What do you want? I’m not in the mood,” Nicki said holding the door. Tyler caught Niki’s hand as he reached toward the handle.

“I owe you a lot of explaining Nik, I know,” he said taking a step into the foyer but not going beyond the invisible line that separates a welcomed guest from someone you would just as soon dispatch at the threshold. “And I will, but right now I need to talk to you. Somewhere private.”

“Fine, go ahead,” Nicki said trying not to reveal her complicated feelings. Right now, she was mostly pissed off, so much so that her good home training failed to offer her guest a seat, or even something to drink. She just stood there with him in the foyer, arms folded across her chest. “What?”

“It’s not private here, Nik.”

“What do you mean it’s not private? No bugs here the last time I did a sweep.” She was being facetious; she never swept for bugs. That was television shit.

“There are, and when was the last time you checked?” Detective Tyler asked. He was not being facetious.

“This is my home.”

“I know, Nik. Grab a jacket. It will be cold.”

It was not Nicki’s nature to let things go. She should have been asking a million questions. What the hell is going on? Who bugged my house? When? How? Where? Why? Where the hell are we going? Are you kidding me with this cloak and dagger crap? Should I have asked for a mistrial?

Her mind raced wildly from thought to thought and she was still angry that after all these years Tyler had the nerve to show up at her house, unannounced. He knows I hate that! But Nicki didn’t say any of that out loud.
